It's said that Christopher Nolan spent ten years writing his screenplay for . The film's hero tests a young architect by challenging her to create a maze, and Nolan tests us with his own dazzling maze. We have to trust him that he can lead us through, because much of the time we're lost and disoriented. Nolan must have rewritten this story time and again, finding that every change had a ripple effect down through the whole fabric. Advertisement. The story can either be told in a few sentences, or not told at all. Here is a movie immune to spoilers: If you knew how it ended, that would tell you nothing unless you knew how it got there. And telling you how it got there would produce bafflement. The movie is all about process, about fighting our way through enveloping sheets of reality and dream, reality within dreams, dreams without reality. It's a breathtaking juggling act, and Nolan may have considered his . It was the story of a man with short- term memory loss, and the story was told backwards. Like the hero of that film, the viewer of . We can never even be quite sure what the relationship between dream time and real time is. The hero explains that you can never remember the beginning of a dream, and that dreams that seem to cover hours may only last a short time. Yes, but you don't know that when you're dreaming. And what if you're inside another man's dream? How does your dream time synch with his? It's said that Christopher Nolan spent ten years writing his screenplay for "Inception." That must have involved prodigious concentration, like playing blindfold. Best romantic movies, Netflix. Say, what better way to counter the danger of a Valentine’s Day argument with thy beloved than by watching a movie – thereby. What do you really know? Cobb (Leonardo Di. Caprio) is a corporate raider of the highest order. He infiltrates the minds of other men to steal their ideas. Now he is hired by a powerful billionaire to do the opposite: To introduce an idea into a rival's mind, and do it so well he believes it is his own. This has never been done before; our minds are as alert to foreign ideas as our immune system is to pathogens. The rich man, named Saito (Ken Watanabe), makes him an offer he can't refuse, an offer that would end Cobb's forced exile from home and family. ![]() ![]() Cobb assembles a team, and here the movie relies on the well- established procedures of all heist movies. We meet the people he will need to work with: Arthur (Joseph Gordon- Levitt), his longtime associate; Eames (Tom Hardy), a master at deception; Yusuf (Dileep Rao), a master chemist. And there is a new recruit, Ariadne (Ellen Page), a brilliant young architect who is a prodigy at creating spaces. ![]() Cobb also goes to touch base with his father- in- law Miles (Michael Caine), who knows what he does and how he does it. These days Michael Caine need only appear on a screen and we assume he's wiser than any of the other characters. It's a gift. Advertisement. But wait. Why does Cobb need an architect to create spaces in dreams? He explains to her. Dreams have a shifting architecture, as we all know; where we seem to be has a way of shifting. Cobb's assignment is the . Saito wants him to initiate ideas that will lead to the surrender of his rival's corporation. Cobb needs Ariadne to create a deceptive maze- space in Fischer's dreams so that (I think) new thoughts can slip in unperceived. Is it a coincidence that Ariadne is named for the woman in Greek mythology who helped Theseus escape from the Minotaur's labyrinth? Cobb tutors Ariadne on the world of dream infiltration, the art of controlling dreams and navigating them. Nolan uses this as a device for tutoring us as well. And also as the occasion for some of the movie's astonishing special effects, which seemed senseless in the trailer but now fit right in. The most impressive to me takes place (or seems to) in Paris, where the city literally rolls back on itself like a roll of linoleum tile. Protecting Fischer are any number of gun- wielding bodyguards, who may be working like the mental equivalent of antibodies; they seem alternatively real and figurative, but whichever they are, they lead to a great many gunfights, chase scenes and explosions, which is the way movies depict conflict these days. So skilled is Nolan that he actually got me involved in one of his chases, when I thought I was relatively immune to scenes that have become so standard. That was because I cared about who was chasing and being chased. If you've seen any advertising at all for the film, you know that its architecture has a way of disregarding gravity. Buildings tilt. Streets coil. Characters float. This is all explained in the narrative. The movie is a perplexing labyrinth without a simple through- line, and is sure to inspire truly endless analysis on the web. Nolan helps us with an emotional thread. The reason Cobb is motivated to risk the dangers of inception is because of grief and guilt involving his wife Mal (Marion Cotillard), and their two children. More I will not (in a way, cannot) say. Cotillard beautifully embodies the wife in an idealized way. Whether we are seeing Cobb's memories or his dreams is difficult to say- -even, literally, in the last shot. But she makes Mal function as an emotional magnet, and the love between the two provides an emotional constant in Cobb's world, which is otherwise ceaselessly shifting. Advertisement. We have made some notes while getting Here, but we are not quite sure where Here is. Yet matters of life, death and the heart are involved- -oh, and those multi- national corporations, of course. And Nolan doesn't pause before using well- crafted scenes from spycraft or espionage, including a clever scheme on board a 7. The movies often seem to come from the recycling bin these days: Sequels, remakes, franchises. It is wholly original, cut from new cloth, and yet structured with action movie basics so it feels like it makes more sense than (quite possibly) it does. I thought there was a hole in ? Maybe there's a hole in . Christopher Nolan reinvented . Yet few directors will attempt to recycle. Great, Romantic Date Night Movies That Guys Will Enjoy Just As Much As Girls. Earlier this week I wrote about how the college acapella movie Pitch Perfect might actually be for guys–or at the very least, a movie that even the most Bro- ey dude could surprisingly appreciate. Predictably, this prompted many people to be all like “Wow Lance, that’s awesome! You should do a list of more movies that are great for both guys and girls!“****No one actually said this, I don’t think. But when you’re inviting your more- than- friend over, and need to figure out whether or not you should continue seeing each other for long enough to simply assume that you are now dating, this list could probably be extremely helpful. How To Lose A Guy In 1. Days (2. 00. 3)A few movies on this list possess what I like to call the “Bro listening to Backstreet Boys” phenomenon. This occurs when someone is exposed to something their personal brand should probably hate, but ends up fully embracing it because it satisfies some sort of inexplicable sensory impulse. I. e., while Frat stars and Backstreet Boys probably shouldn’t go hand in hand theoretically, the caliber of music has given them no other choice but to incorporate it into their repertoire. When a dude is exposed to a film that fits this criteria, he’ll be unable to stop watching for reasons he cannot explain, other than the fact that he needs to know what happens. At the movie’s conclusion, he’ll admit that while he had no business liking the movie, he couldn’t help himself. How To Lose A Guy In 1. Days is one of these movies. Zoolander (2. 00. The Bromance/Rivals plotline between Zoolander and Hansel merges nicely with a satirical take on the fashion world, all mixed in with a love story. The quotability will establish a future precedent for inside jokes, and the upcoming sequel means that it’s somewhat relevant. So just like you and Gavin, this has got a lot of things going for it. Swingers (1. 99. 6)A movie that’s seemingly for guys, but is, at its heart of hearts, a sappy take on love. Swingers feels unbelievably dated at this point (voicemails are a huge plot point), which is something that I think works to its favor–it shows that no matter the mediums, relationships are basically always the same. Silver Linings Playbook (2. The two “it” people of the 2. If he can’t handle the love/mental health aspect of the movie, just tell him it’s a movie about a father and son who really like the Philadelphia Eagles. And that Chris Tucker is in it. The Spectacular Now (2. Don’t watch this if you’re trying to break up with someone anytime soon. It tricks you into thinking that the world is the greatest place on earth. Hitch (2. 00. 5)Will Smith is one of the few actors those with x and y chromosomes can mutually agree on. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (2. 01. It shakes up the traditional rom- com format quite well. This is very good for the dude who is slowly dabbling into hipsterdrome, but needs to move at his own pace. One of those movies that isn’t gonna satisfy every couple, but could also end up being you and your partner’s favorite flick. Annie Hall (1. 97. Widely considered one of the best romantic comedies of all- time, and for good reason–the “comedy” aspect is outrageous. Has withstood the test of time rather incredibly, likely because Woody Allen humor is basically Curb Your Enthusiasm + more intense existential doubt. She’s All That (1. The Backstreet Boys Rule, through and through. The 4. 0 Year- Old Virgin (2. A chick- flick disguised as a raunchy comedy. Probably best for those couples who enjoy talking about how good you suddenly feel after taking a shit. Say Anything (1. 98. John Cusack’s finest hour. Very very quality. This was Cameron Crowe’s first directorial effort–Crowe also did Almost Famous, Jerry Maguire, and was the brains behind Fast Times At Ridgemont High. Bridesmaids (2. 01. Another one of those “seemingly for girls, but just as much for guys” movies. Opening with that very very funny John Hamm scene definitely helps the cause. Serendipity (2. 00. Big time Backstreet rule. I once watched this entire movie by myself, commercials and all. As outrageous as the plot- line is, the beginning scenes are so strong it’s believable enough–the perfect happy medium for a movie like this one. Jeremy Piven crushes it in support. Zac And Miri Make A Porno (2. Like Virgin, best for couples who bond over weird raunchy things and call each other “dude.” But probably very good for those couples. Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist (2. I watched this movie during freshman year of college and thought it was good enough to watch with a girl I liked at the time. It worked out, I think. That, or she just felt bad for me for attempting to be slightly emo.*Not sure how well this one ages. Feel like it may be tough to stomach if you’re over 2. Adventureland (2. Probably the best movie out there dealing with the lazy college summers, doing weird jobs hanging with crazy hometown friends. For those who’ve had this sort of experience, a timeless classic. The Wedding Singer (1. Most Sandler movies are pretty much rom- coms posing as dick joke marathons with Steve Buscemi cameos. This one feels a bit different; maybe because it’s one of his earlier works. Robbie is a very solid character that you can’t help but rooting for, guy or girl. I Love You, Man (2. Just like many comedies based in LA, this revolves around people who are at very cool and culturally relevant, yet also comfortable financially. A very underrated plotline here (and one to play up if you’re a guy) is the girlfriend trio. You have the engaged one, the married one, and the desperately single one. If you’re in your later 2. Safety Not Guaranteed (2. Quirky, odd, and a good story. Again for those who are considering dabbling in hipster lifestyles, and/or enjoy doing things like going to the recently gentrified area of the city. Also for those who love Nick from New Girl. Pitch Perfect (2. As discussed. I found this surprisingly tremendous. Take Me Home (2. One of those Netflix stowaways that probably has no business being as good as it is. Take Me Home is the story of two people, both in the middle of major life crises, finding themselves stuck together on a cross country road trip. Fun fact, this was a passion project for the writer/director/lead actor Sam Jaeger and his wife Amber, who also happens to be the co- lead. Easy A (2. 01. 0)Strongest application of the Backstreet Boy phenomenon. This should also have a cast that should withstand the test of time; in addition to Emma Stone we’ve got a pre- meltdown Amanda Bynes, a dangerously funny Stanley Tucci, and Gossip Girl Penn “despite my name, I somehow didn’t play lacrosse” Badgley. Great fun. Time to crank up the Netflix. Kristen Stewart - Wikipedia. Kristen Jaymes Stewart (born (1. April 9, 1. 99. 0). We all know how long award shows can go, but odds are the MTV ceremony won’t go on forever — despite the changes. But, that said: “I would do a two- night event if I could.”In other cool news, categories are now gender neutral. In addition to looking for more platforms, English is also thrilled to be “breaking gender barriers, saying a performance is a performance and for our audience, and I think for us, there really isn’t a distinguishing factor between a male performance or a female performance. I think breaking down some of those barriers has been really interesting for us to evolve the show to a new space. Our audience increasingly doesn’t really recognize those barriers that are sort of traditional and we’re always going to be pushing that.”For Patterson — who was brought in last year for the show’s 2. I don’t feel honored by that. That distinction doesn’t exist for me. I know that it doesn’t exist for the talent community.”She continues, “Good work is good work. Performances of the year are performances of the year regardless of the size of the screen or gender, so those walls have really come down and this was the right year to evolve the show to be a natural, organic reflection of the audience and how it consumes and how it sees the world.” What’s more, having been a part of the 2. If it was my award show, I would do it like that.”How political are things going to get? After a very political awards season and categories like Best Fight Against the System, how are politics going to play into this show? It’s an honest expression of where our audience is at this moment in time.”Let’s not forget host Adam De. Vine! We’ve had so much fun with Adam. He moved in with us a month ago. Once again, the only reason to watch this—other than morbid curiosity—is to see the actor playing Le Chiffre: Orson Welles, perfectly cast as the short, 2. Fleming described in the original novel. ![]() It's a shame that we got two weird, off- brand adaptations of Fleming's very first James Bond novel before it ever turned up in the series proper—but the truth is that Casino Royale wouldn't have worked for most of the actors who played Bond before Daniel Craig anyway. The story is too small and too dark and too gutting. Connery might have been able to pull it off before Goldfinger, which shifted the franchise into a lighter, pulpier direction. And if Timothy Dalton's darker take on Bond had caught on with mainstream audiences (and contract negotiations hadn't gotten in the way), Casino Royale might have been exactly the story he was suited to star in. There was, to be fair, one long- shot chance that an older Bond actor could have taken Casino Royale on. Quentin Tarantino expressed interest in directing a subversive, black- and- white version of Casino Royale, but bailed when he learned MGM planned to replace Pierce Brosnan, whose contract was in flux after starring in four 0. The decision to reboot the franchise and start fresh with Casino Royale was bolder than it might seem today. Die Another Day, Brosnan's final turn—often written off as a flop today—was actually the highest- grossing James Bond movie of all time. The decision to reboot the franchise was a kind of preemptive strike—a recognition that that Jack Bauers and Jason Bournes of the world were starting to make James Bond look a little creaky. Today, the idea of a dark and gritty reboot has correctly become a much- derided cliche, but after surfing down a glacier and fencing against Madonna, Bond was desperately in need of a dark and gritty reboot. Ian Fleming's original novel provided the basic framework: a short, grim story about a secret agent who neither saves the world nor gets the girl. The 2. 00. 6 adaptation of Casino Royale retains a single holdover from the Brosnan movies: Judi Dench's M—presumably because Casino Royale's creative brain trust correctly intuited that no actor in the world was better suited to the role. But M was the only familiar face in this very, very different take on 0. The bold departures from the franchise's long history began with the leading man, Daniel Craig, who was instantly deemed too blonde and uncouth by a bevy of outraged fans. But casting Craig ended up serving a dual purpose: It clearly severed Casino Royale from the movies that came before it, and ensured that an exceptionally talented actor would chart the course for Bond's future. Conventional wisdom holds that a successful performance in a blockbuster owes as much to stuntmen as it does to actors, but dismissing Craig's contributions would be doing a disservice to his extraordinary performance. His Bond—steely, precise, intelligent, and controlled, with a bitter, seething core that sometimes tips over into outright cruelty—channels the best of Fleming's work and brings it squarely into the 2. Casino Royale's cast was filled out with a slew of up- and- coming talents: Eva Green as the guarded, alluring Vesper Lynd, played with such deft complexity that it should have put the catch- all term . It's no coincidence that each of these actors has gone on to considerable success in film and TV in the decade since Casino Royale's release. The screenplay for Casino Royale follows the basic structure laid out by Fleming: James Bond is assigned to play cards against Le Chiffre—an international criminal whose bankroll is running low—in a high- stakes game at the Casino Royale. If Bond wins, he'll have toppled a villain who might be persuaded to rat on more villains; if he loses, the British government will have directly financed terrorism. Over the course of the mission, Bond reluctantly but helplessly falls in love with his ally, Vesper—and after defeating Le Chiffre (and surviving a grueling round of torture that pushes the PG- 1. Vesper is a double agent who has been blackmailed into betraying him all along. By the end of the story, Vesper is dead, and Bond has forced himself to believe he doesn't care: In a line pulled directly from the novel, he coldly shrugs, . There was still plenty of action—including an all- time great chase sequence that saw Bond parkour- ing all over a construction site in pursuit of a suspect—but the tone was smarter and more elegiac, with a corker of an ending that never quite let you overlook the murkiness of Bond's ultimate victory. Casino Royale is the kind of once- in- a- lifetime movie you can only make with a franchise as old as this one, because so much of the joy comes in how it riffs on our knowledge of everything that came before. Some moments lay it on a little thick—like when Bond snarls that he doesn't give a damn whether his martini is shaken or stirred. But others—like Le Chiffre casually mocking villains who resort to . As written by Fleming, Vesper is a little thin—an idealized femme fatale with an inner life we never learn very much about. Her death in the novel is a suicide; she leaves a note explaining she was a double agent working for Russia all along, and killed herself when she realized her former employers would never leave her alone. The film wisely complicates this nasty twist of the knife, giving both Bond and Vesper more agency in her tragic fate. Bond learns about Vesper's plight before she dies, and despite his fury tries desperately to save her when she ends up trapped underwater. And Vesper, in a final act of sabotage, leaves Bond a valuable parting gift: the information required to track down the mysterious organization that orchestrated her doom in the first place, setting the stage for a new future for the 0. So what happened next? At the risk of damning with a compliment, my biggest problem with Casino Royale is that it might have been too good to spawn a follow- up that could equal it. The next film, Quantum of Solace, was a valiant attempt at a direct sequel that ended up being inferior in every conceivable way. The movie after that, Skyfall, is a crowd- pleaser with a truly memorable villain and the clever reintroductions of Moneypenny and Q—but it's still a step away from Casino Royale's smaller, darker Bond and toward the excesses of the Roger Moore era. And last year's Spectre—which featured Bond's arch- nemesis Blofeld for the first time in more than thirty years—was a flat- out disaster, saddling Bond with a love interest who was so unconvincing, in part, because Casino Royale had done such a remarkable job of selling Vesper as the one love of Bond's life. Ten years after the release of Casino Royale, the James Bond franchise remains at a crossroads; today, it's not even clear whether Daniel Craig will play 0. But whatever happens to Bond and the Daniel Craig era next, Casino Royale is a towering and singular accomplishment for the 0. Hollywood studio actually took a gamble with everything it had, and won. While the 1. 0th, 2. Die Another Day, a greatest hits compilation with little narrative pull which was in hindsight downright embarrassing. The result is technically superb, with Sam Mendes bringing weight to the characters and the visuals being some of the best in the whole series. But the film also demonstrates how fundamentally little Bond has changed, something which is cause for both concern and celebration. The previous attempts at reinvention - Casino Royale, and Goldeneye before that - were prompted by perceptions that the series was old- fashioned, caused respectively by the game- changing Bourne series and the end of the Cold War. But while these films are impressive technical exercises, which still feel in isolation like a breath of fresh air, the basic formula has remained more or less the same for 5. The series has become so much of a genre in itself that any claim of reinvention or radical departure should be greeted with extreme caution. Skyfall continues to follow the trail blazed by Bourne by showing the extent of high- tech surveillance, and how advances in communications have changed the way that decisions are taken about people's lives. Both the villain and the revamped Q branch borrow from The Social Network, a film which argued that the world is now run not by governments but by technical wizards, and by extension how 'nerds' have grown from being perceived as harmless and weak into a force to be reckoned with. The entire sequence in Shanghai owes a massive debt to Blade Runner: the shot of Bond's gun in moving close- up and the fight against the Japanese signage are eerily close to Ridley Scott's masterpiece. There are also touches of Inception present in the lift scene and on the villain's island, whose ruined buildings could have come straight from Christopher Nolan's Limbo. Much of the plot, while appearing original, hints back to conversations in Goldeneye. The allusions to Bond's parents are akin to the scene with 0. Alec Trevelyan, Silva was betrayed by his homeland, and represents what Bond could have been had things turned out slightly differently. The journey . What makes Skyfall successful (and memorable) is the way in which these ideas are presented or repackaged, so that they appear either original or become distinctive to the character. Having an abundance of references was largely to be expected, given the occasion that is being marked, and if nothing else the film scores over Die Another Day by actually having a coherent and interesting story. The story is a not- too- distant cousin to The Ipcress File or Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, insofar as it uses a troubled yet distinctly British protagonist to focus on the changing mechanics of the secret service, particularly the ways in which technology is altering or eroding the role of agents. This is reflected in the numerous scenes of M answering to politicians, the increasing dominance of Q branch, and the conversations between M and Mallory. We go through the same motions as all the Bond films after Diamonds are Forever, with Bond being sent on a difficult mission after a riveting pre- title sequence. He snoops around with an attractive sidekick- cum- love interest, who despite seeming more forthright and independent still takes a back seat, in more ways than one. After several fights with secondary villains, he and the main antagonist meet and talk about the plot. There then ensues a cat- and- mouse chase over several locations, eventually resulting in Bond triumphing, sometimes with a deep personal cost. No- one has yet had the confidence to fully abandon Bond's gadgets, vodka martinis or inherent sexual magnetism; even when Timothy Dalton made him cruel and dangerous, the character was still placed within conventional surroundings. If, on the other hand, we see this film as a genre exercise, whose mechanics we know inside out, then the film takes flight and becomes remarkable. It's like a well- directed production of The Mousetrap: predictable and often silly, but presented so confidently that it becomes endearing. Despite its prominent references to other films, it is visually distinctive and spectacular. The film is shot by the fantastic Roger Deakins, who collaborated with Mendes on Jarhead and Revolutionary Road. He paints the film in a number of metallic greys and silvers, giving the action a polished sheen even in its most kinetic moments. Mendes' camerawork compliments him very well, relying less on Bourne- inflected hand- held work and more on longer, sweeping shots to establish the scale of the locations. It's tempting to just view them as archetypes and therefore let the film wash over us, but even with all our cynicism we do invest in Bond and the people around him. Daniel Craig is beginning to rival Dalton for the title of Best Bond, continuing the intensity he cultivated in the last two films and really showing the strain of the character. Javier Bardem may be more pantomime here than he was in No Country for Old Men, but he's still intimidating, and his introductory shot is one of the best in the series. While Bernard Lee's M more or less stayed the same from film to film, her M has gone from calling Bond a . Elsewhere Ben Whishaw impresses as Q, clearly drawing on Brains from Thunderbirds, and Ralph Fiennes is in his element as Mallory, though at times he tips over into his performance as Victor Quartermaine in Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were- Rabbit. It's nothing like as ground- breaking as has been claimed, with all the clich. But as a genre piece in and of itself, it delivers on almost every level, thanks to the believable central performances and Mendes' assured direction. The only question that remains is whether these high standards can be sustained for Spectre. The Ultimate Fighter – Episodes – Season 1. Season 1. 9 - Episode 1. Home Video Hell is where filmic outcasts—straight- to- video, straight- to- VOD, or barely released—spend eternity. The condemned: Bethany. The plot: This is a movie that fits comfortably alongside any number of other derivations of the “something spooky in the walls” horror subgenre. Claire Mason and her husband, Aaron, move back to her childhood home following the death of her mother. However, she immediately gets a bad feeling, and starts experiencing strange hallucinations and flashbacks to her childhood, where her mother abused her and treated her like a show pony for childhood beauty pageants, and Claire’s only friend was an imaginary one named Bethany. Now, as odd things begin happening, Claire starts to worry that her imaginary friend may still exist in some spectral form, and is none too happy to see her back home. ![]() You can pretty much guess where things go from there, especially if you watch the trailer, the ending of which spoils one of the better scares in the film, even if it is a direct rip- off from basically every J- horror movie ever. Over- the- top box copy: “A real American horror story.” Take that, Ryan Murphy and FX! ![]() ![]() Although, claiming your obviously fictional story is “real” is a pretty lame move these days, on par with “inspired by a true story” during the opening credits, or “from the producers of. Unsurprisingly, she serves as a producer on the film.) The two may be copacetic as work friends, but Doherty’s performance here is about what you’d expect, which is to say, not great. Thankfully, she’s only in about four scenes, so perhaps Bressack is more a skilled tactician than anything—her name presumably got the film more attention and overseas distribution options. Green plays the couple’s therapist, which is funny enough, but he sports a thick beard and a little newsboy cap the entire time, to boot. There’s not exactly high demand for Green’s dramatic chops, one assumes, but he acquits himself reasonably well in Bethany. It helps that he’s not asked to do much beyond, “Make bad jokes about being Canadian,” and (spoiler alert, in case you were already really invested in his character), “Die.” Also, he’s literally playing someone named “Dr. Brown,” and they don’t make a single Back To The Future joke; I guess his character only likes Canadian blockbusters. It’s basically a four- person cast, and the other two actors—the actual stars of this film—both turn in solid performances. Stefanie Estes does a fine job as Claire, while her co- star and ubiquitous character actor Zack Ward (another Attack Of The Killer Lampreys alum) puts in another appearance that will trigger bouts of, “Oh, hey, it’s that guy,” from the many people who have seen him pop up in more than a hundred roles since his debut child performance of “Scut Farkus,” the bully from A Christmas Story. The execution: Surprisingly tolerable. Once you realize Bressack is reasonably competent behind the camera, and the actors actually top- lining this film know what they’re doing, the whole thing becomes entertaining enough, the equivalent of any number of serviceable, albeit slapdash, horror films that deliver little more than a few good scares and a way to kill 9. In addition to starring, Ward co- wrote the film with Bressack, and despite the derivative (and deeply illogical) nature of the story, it works as a means of injecting a few jump scares and goosebumps into your viewing experience. Yes, somehow Claire failed to realize she had a misshapen sibling living behind the wallpaper her entire young life, instead assuming the hands pressing out of the wall and the voice she heard talking to her were the product of her imagination. I guess Mom was too busy counting the beauty pageant trophies to care about her deformed dead kid, since she left her corpse there all these years? And that’s only one of a number of things that don’t really add up. ![]() Home Video Hell is where filmic outcasts—straight-to-video, straight-to-VOD, or barely released—spend eternity. The condemned: BethanyThe plot: This is a movie. Claire lived at home until she was 1. Bethany was apparently totally cool with her still- living sis. It’s only when Claire returns following the mother’s death all these years later that Bethany starts to haunt the shit out of her sibling, perhaps because she wanted to wait until the cameras were rolling. On the plus side, one of the ghost’s vengeful attempts to hurt Claire is actually pretty creepy, largely because Bressack keeps the jump- scare moment delayed as long as possible. Although, that arm coming out of the wall is a somewhat silly payoff. Speaking of silly payoffs, the first “scare” is a delightfully dumb one. Having just moved into the place, Claire already knows she doesn’t care for it. Too many bad memories, and the like. But as she’s sitting at the dinner table at night, arguing the issue with Aaron, she looks down and sees the spoon she was just using has been moved from where she left it. She moves it back, continues to argue, looks down again—and it moved back! At this point, the scary music swells, Claire flees the table, and we’re rewarded with the terrifying sight of. I’m pretty hardy when it comes to extreme gore of the blood- and- guts variety, but everyday behaviors, when blown up and emphasized, really make me sick. There’s a scene here where Bressack amps up the discomfort by zooming in on Aaron slurping and crunching some milky cereal, and the effect is nauseating. Similarly, there’s another moment where Claire is at the piano when a bad memory disturbs her playing, and she suddenly tears off a nail, which is something I have nightmares about even without the aid of Bethany. Little things like that are almost enough to make me forget how much I laughed when I saw that Claire and Aaron apparently have long- distance therapy sessions with their buddy Doc Brown, but choose to do it via a TV screen, with nary a laptop in sight. Likelihood it will rise from obscurity: It may have some legs for fans of silly, low- budget horror, especially with the campy Doherty scenes, however fleeting they may be. Plus, Tom Green’s appearance in this dour and serious role just makes it an oddity. But the film’s middling level of quality—not hacky garbage, but not genuinely spooky—probably condemns it to the same afterlife as the countless other C- level horror films featuring limited appearances from former household names. Damnable commentary track or special features? As with many films that will likely only live digitally from now on, there’s no special features, but a Google search will turn up a pair of behind- the- scenes featurettes, in which the very likable Bressack is remarkably candid about the pains of being a director on a tiny budget, explaining tricks like getting two shots out of one, for instance, by shooting a character doing lines, and then panning down to show them picking up an object as an insert for a completely different scene, one he can later edit into place. Most Tragic Horror Movie Endings Ever. Accepted storytelling theory teaches that there are only 3 types of conflict in storytelling: Man versus Man, Man versus Nature, and Man versus Himself (or herself, obviously). Horror fans assert that there are only a handful of different horror endings—one of which can be applied to every horror film. There’s “Everything’s Okay,” and “Everything seems okay. Sure, it’s fun to see monsters get exploded or zombie hordes dispatched by plucky groups of survivors. But we know that in real- life, as in horror, sometimes the most likely outcome is also the most tragic. Rampant spoilers for all movies mentioned, so beware! Here are the 2. 0 Insanely Bleak Horror Movie Endings That Will Haunt You For Life. Carrie. We refer here to the original, 1. Sissy Spacek version of Stephen King. The remakes of Carrie, though, have all had something of value to add. Carrietta White is as tragic as tragic figures come. Doomed from birth with a religious whackadoo for a mom, endlessly tormented by peers, and apparently forsaken by the God her mother wields like a club—it’s easy to argue that she never had a chance. Even 4. 0 years after the film’s release, fans still argue whether or not Carrie White is the villain of the story. Whether you think Carrie is evil or just a nice girl pushed well beyond the breaking point, it cannot be denied that her story ends tragically. Sure, Carrie murdered her chief tormentor, Margaret. But it’s not like she enjoyed it. The deaths of classmates, teachers, and even the gym coach who was kind to her—all had essentially no meaning; they’re just more victims of a rage- fueled rampage. Nearly everyone ends up dead at the end of this sad tale, and those who lived are sure to be forever haunted by their time with Carrie. The Host. If you ask a horror fan, they’ll likely tell you that the best reason to watch foreign horror movies is that they’ll kill anyone. In the US, it’s easy to get used to the, shall we say Spielbergian approach to family films. We want the heroes to live, the villains to die, and the final girl to be rescued at the last possible moment. That’s good cinema, right? But see, horror doesn’t always work that way. Its purpose isn’t to make you feel good about life, hopeful for the future, or confident that the hero will make it out alive. There’s plenty of Asian horror that we didn’t have room for on our list. Audition, for example, or Ringu. Nor was there space for similarly themed monster or aliens movies like Honeymoon. The Host is a must- include, because we want the girl to live so badly. When she doesn’t, we wonder if there was ever a point to fighting the monster in the first place. Oculus. The small cast and simple setting of Oculus definitely belie its emotional impact. Viewers really root for Kaylie and Tim, two adult siblings whose lives have been one tragedy after another—all because of a cursed mirror. Dangerous, even deadly mirror stories are nothing new, not since Lewis Caroll anyway. Oculus follows this brother- sister duo over key moments in their lives, and details their plan to capture evidence of, and destroy the cursed mirror before it can cause any more damage. The tragedy in this story comes predominantly from the careful planning that the siblings, especially Kaylie, employ. They use multiple cameras to capture every second. They’re careful, mindful, honest, and cautious the entire time. So when the worst possible chain of events occurs, we know that there was nothing that could have stopped it. These two didn’t deserve what happened to them, but that wasn’t enough to save them either. An American Werewolf in London. There’s much to enjoy about this surprise hit lycanthrope movie from the heart of the ’8. There’s a fine and increasingly gruesome performance by Griffin Dunne, a first- rate, practical effects- driven werewolf transformation, and a bunch of horrific murders. It’s also got a killer soundtrack and an adorable romance between David Naughton and Jenny Agutter, plus a blink- and- you’ll- miss- it appearance by Rik Mayall as a patron at the Slaughtered Lamb pub. American Werewolf in London may correctly be called horror- comedy, since there’s a ton of wry humor. That’s why it’s all the more shocking when the lead character is gunned down in the street like. It’s a horrendous ending to the life of a character we’d all come to like by that point. David and his friend were unlucky enough to be attacked by a wolf, and neither made it through alive. At the very least, it seemed that the lycanthropy curse ended with David. The less said about the sequel, the better. Invasion of the Body Snatchers. There are two exceptional versions of this sci- fi- horror classic. We think the 1. 97. The Invasion of the Body Snatchers films also carry powerful thematic messages about conformity, political ideation, us- versus- them mentality, and the perils of studying botany. The idea of alien plants descending on us isn’t as far- fetched as we may like to think. In fact, some say it’s downright likely. Whether you’re rooting for Kevin Mc. Carthy or Donald Sutherland, get ready for intense disappointment. Terrorized children, distant spouses, and a slow, creeping burn set the scene for the final moments of these films. Mc. Carthy winds up alone, screaming down the street that everyone should run, that they’re next. Heedless, they treat him like a crazy person. Mc. Carthy is still running around screaming when the 1. Invasion of the Body Snatchers begins. It ends when Veronica Cartwright discovers that her last friend in the world has been assimilated. Apollo 1. 8Regardless of genre, it’s always tragic when everybody dies. There was a Star Wars movie like that once, and it was incredible. Tragic, but incredible. Any movie that takes place outside the Earth’s atmosphere is likely to offer more chances to die a brutal or horrible death. When just outside your door is an airless vacuum, staying inside seems like the only smart choice. The 2. 01. 1 movie Apollo 1. US hasn’t made another return trip to the surface of the moon after the Apollo program ended. In short: monsters. Little spidery ones, in fact. But that’s not the worst of it. In Apollo 1. 8, astronauts are sent to confront dangers they haven’t been told about, and their government was fully prepared to abandon them on the moon if things don’t go well. Tragic as it is that none of the astronauts survive (we really like them by the end), the betrayals are far more difficult to content with. It’s a small but powerful film. The Pit and the Pendulum. The films made by American International in the ’6. Audiences still love Vincent Price as a kind but tormented anti- hero constantly falling victim to one unfortunate circumstance or another. In this case, Price is Nicholas of the house Medina, Don of a fine old family. His wife has recently died and Nicholas is far from over it. As the story progresses, a dark family secret is revealed. Francis Barnard is almost killed, and the doctor dies a quick death—quicker than he deserved, perhaps. Nicholas, through no fault of his own, is quite insane before falling to his own death. That’s a tragedy. And awful as she is, seeing Medina’s deceitful wife left in the iron maiden? There’s a certain poetic justice to that. But what an awful way to die. Alien Trilogy. The Alien series is one that even the most ardent fans can’t seem to agree on. For some, the first three films make a perfect trilogy with a beautifully tragic ending. As a trilogy, the Alien series is a tremendous accomplishment that straddles genre. It’s horror. It’s sci- fi. By the third installment, it’s an epic drama, an action masterpiece. In each film, the tragedy is palpable. We watch in helpless horror as the crew of the Nostromo is dispatched one by one. Ripley’s survival feels like a victory until we see the reaction from The Company in the first sequel. Before we know it, she’s back in danger and another fine crew gets picked off one by one. This time though, a little girl, a marine, and Bishop the “artificial person” survive. That begins with the tragedy of Newt and Hicks’s deaths. It ends with still more good people dying (and some less good) and ends with Ripley sacrificing herself to rid the universe of xenomorphs. Perhaps the greatest tragedy is that it didn’t work. Sinister. The movie Sinister starts out with a pretty basic setup: family drama ensues when character moves family into house with sordid past. Each of the two children have some sort of creepy issue. The husband is lying to the wife, the townies think they’re ghouls, and something terrifying is going on. Like most movies of its type, viewers wind up yelling the same things at the characters on screen: “Get out! Just pack your stuff and leave right now!” When the characters don’t listen, moviegoers can sit back, comforted in the knowledge that had they only taken your advice, they’d all be alive. But in Sinister, the deceitful writer does pack up his terrified family in the middle of the night, and takes them to a new house. Thank goodness, right? The family will be spared. We learn that they were supposed to leave the house, that leaving was part of a long- established pattern that would ultimately destroy the whole family in a memorably gruesome manner. What kind of monster treats good coffee that way? Plus, there’s a sequel. Eden Lake. Far better than the average couple- alone- flees- band- of- killers flick, Eden Lake features Michael Fassbender and Kelly Reilly as Steve and Jenny, a couple taking a long weekend together. He’s about to propose, but a band of violent children turn their weekend into a fight for survival. Eden Lake is a little bit Deliverance, a little bit Straw Dogs, and a touch of Lord of the Flies. These kids are vicious, eventually killing Steve with a series of increasingly sadistic “pranks” they record on their cell phones. Jenny flees for safety, ultimately killing one of the children. Once she’s safe with some locals, she explains what has happened. |
